Tara is a mixed breed dog that my wife and I found at the Salt
Lake County Animal Services shelter in October 1992. She had a
"shaky" start in life: She was about three months old
when we met her at the shelter, shaking in fear of the situation
she found herself in.
Tara is now three and a half years old. Her favorite activities
are playing in the back yard with her adopted brother Kirby,
chasing a frisbee, ball, stick, or whatever you happen to throw,
and visiting her friends at Learning Services, a residential facility
for men with traumatic brain injuries.
A couple of years ago, my wife and I heard about an organization
in Salt Lake City called the Good Shepherd Association. The Good
Shepherd Association has since renamed itself to Intermountain
Therapy Animals to avoid confusion that the original name
created (people assumed it was either a religious organization
or a club just for German Shepherd dogs). InterMountain Therapy
Animals is a non-profit organization specializing in providing
animal-assisted therapy in the areas of physical, occupational,
speech, and psychotherapies, as well as special education. They
are the oldest and largest affiliate of the Delta
Society in the state of Utah. Their motto is "Paws Helping
People."

This is Tara at about 16 months. This photo was taken at the
Utah Humane Society,
which offers a "Your Pet with Santa" photo shoot every
Christmas season. Santa has been cropped out of this version
of that photo, but you get the idea.
After seeing them in action, the photographer and Santa at
the Utah Humane Society
have our admiration: They are really good at doing these
holiday photo shoots with animals.
They photographed hundreds of animals and, in our case, we
urged Tara up onto a table next to Santa (wasn't hardSanta
had dog treats!). No more than 5 seconds later, they had taken
a photo (and IMHO, it's a great photo) and were urging
Tara back off the table (wasn't hardwe had dog treats too!).
