Peter Hoogenboom and Patricia Hemrich's Trip to Japan

These are just a few of the photos we took on our recent trip to Japan. We left from Portland, Oregon on July 12 and flew to Nagoya. We returned on July 20th.

This is a view from the backside toward the front of the Kiyomizu Temple. If it weren't so cloudy, you could see the city of Kyoto from here.

Here's Pat at the Kiyomizu Temple. Again, this is the spot where, if it weren't for the rain, you could have a good look at the city of Kyoto.

This is a photo of a painting that is on the ceiling of one of the temples at Tenryuji. This painting was recently finished and many people were trying to get inside to look at it. You needed a reservation and 1500 yen to get yourself on the tour. Tomoko talked with the person keeping the reservations, telling her that we were foreigners and it would mean a lot to us to be able to get in to see it. The woman at the ticket counter said there had been several cancellations. So, we paid our money, took the brochure (all in Japanese, but it did have the photo shown above of the painting) and waited about 40 minutes. Before we went inside, everybody on the tour assembled for a photo. This photo would be for sale after our tour of the temple. We removed our shoes and placed them on the rack. Once inside, we all sat down for a 20 minute talk by one of the monks about how the painting came to be. At least, that's what we think it was about--it was all in Japanese. For all we know, he spent twenty minutes discussing how incredibly large our shoes look in the shoe rack outside. We'll never know.
