This photo was taken in late afternoon on Sunday, October 10. We were exhausted from walking around
so we were on the "Big Bus" just taking in the sights. While we were stopped in traffic (this was
Sunday, but apparently, traffic is bad on Sunday because everybody is returning to London after spending
the weekend in the country), I noticed this car. It looked just like a regular car, but I also noticed
that people were taking pictures of it so I figured that it must be something special and that I better
take a photo of it too. Just after this photo was taken, the couple to the right walked over to it
and took a photo of it with themselves next to it.

On Monday, October 11, we visited the British Museum. It's a huge museum. We were able to cover
just one floor and a special exhibit in half a day there. I think there are two full floors and
two other partial floors and then several special exhibits.
We managed to visit the special exhibit on the Rosetta Stone. The knowledge of how to read
hieroglyphics had been lost by the 4th century, so the discovery of the Rosetta Stone
was a key find that allowed archeologists to finally decipher hieroglyphics. The thing that made
the Rosetta Stone so useful was that the same text was written in three different languages: hieroglyphs,
demotic (a cursive form of ancient Egyptian script used from the 7th century BC) and Greek.
Scientists used Greek as the "key" to allow them to understand the other
two languages.

A large statue of Ramesses II, from his memorial temple at Thebes.
(1270 BC). This statue was supposedly the inspiration for Shelley's
peom "Ozymandias". |
