High Uintas Classic 2002

A couple of photos from the High Uintas Classic Stage Race, a bicycle race held on June 15 and 16, 2002. I participated in the 40-plus Competitive Citizens category road race on June 15. This road race is an 80-mile race from Kamas, Utah to Evanston, Wyoming. It travels over the Mirror Lake Highway and takes you from about 6400 feet in Kamas to 10700 feet at Bald Mountain Pass and finishes at 6750 feet in Evanston.

The Utah portion of this race is across 40 miles or so of a narrow highway through the Uinta Mountains of Utah. These Highway Patrolmen on their motorcycles were some of the vehicles providing traffic control.

This is me just before the start of the race (approximately 9:25 AM). I'm listening to Gary Bywater, the race referee, give last minute race rules, cautions, and instructions.

This is me approaching the finish line, 4:22:58 after the start. This put me at a disappointing ninth place in the Citizen's 40-plus category. Still, it was my first bicycle race in 7 years and the first time I had done this race in 9 years, when I finished in 3:57:00. Ten years ago I did the race and finished in 4:21:00.
